Around 50 cars have been smeared with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the German municipality of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Vehicles, walls and postboxes were defaced, sometimes with swastikas, they reported in a release.
Officers say they were contacted in the late hours on Wednesday, when a resident discovered that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been covered with a reddish substance.
The substance had been applied in the pattern of a banned symbol, they reported.
Law enforcement then found many other smeared cars and house walls in the nearby vicinity.
These symbols are banned in Germany under regulations banning the public display of Nazi symbols.
Law enforcement state early analysis suggest the substance was most likely blood from a person.
"There is still no lead as to where it came from; officials are not yet informed of any injuries in connection with the event," they added.
Municipal representatives said they were working "to resolve the mystery" and have asked to the residents for details.
A senior political figure stated the attack left him stunned and required to be solved promptly.
"This incident affects the core of Hanau and reopens the pain of the extremist attack five years ago," he wrote on social media, recalling the death of nine people by a assailant aiming at people of migrant background in five years prior.
